46/52 – Square
I like to read those developmental milestone charts every once in a while so I can figure out what the Doodle should be able to do at certain ages. Around the time she turned 18 months old I read somewhere that the Doodle should be able to stack blocks. So I whipped out a stash of blocks that hadn’t been touched in months, and when they had been played with previously it was me stacking the blocks and her knocking them over, to see what she could do.
I modeled block stacking and away she went. Hand over hand she was able to put them on top of one another. Overnight it seemed she had developed the fine motor skills to manage this task. And she was interested in stacking the blocks on top of one another for about a whole 10 seconds. Until she realized that it was more fun to knock over the tower of blocks I had been stacking.
The Doodle is nearly 20 months and I’m always looking for easy to clean up activities that will grab her attention for a few moment. She has all of these toys but hasn’t really been all that interested in playing with them of late. She loves to colour. She loves her books. And she loves everyone else’s electronics.
When I noticed the square blocks this morning, and happened to recall that the theme this week was square, it was an opportunity I couldn’t squander. Still, the best part of playing with blocks is knocking them over (as demonstrated by the huge smile above).
That concentration and fine motor skill is incredible. And look how many blocks she can stack now!!!
That’s right. Even Mama wants to get in on the block stacking action. And the Doodle does have the best mama ever!!!
This is the face of a girl who is about to be a tiny bit mischievous.
Cause knocking the blocks over is where the fun is at.
