Tonight our son turned fourteen.  His birthday celebration was simple and subdued.  His meal of choice, shepherd’s pie, followed by chocolate devil’s food cake and the opening of a few presents.

I really wanted to get a picture of him blowing out the candles on his cake.  To capture this moment, we had to light the candles on his cake three consecutive times and sing him happy birthday each time in a different language:  english, then french and then italian.   Those are the hard sacrifices of a birthday boy.
