The Diabolical Ingeniousness of my 12-Year-Old

August 17, 2010

Overnight Bubaloo has seemingly transformed from a child into a tween.  This transition has been most notably marked by a new found love of music.  He’s all about his iPod and Wifey’s old CD player/stereo that he found in the basement.

While his iPod contains all of his favourites and is dominated by Green Day, he has found two CDs that are to his liking.  One is a more modern version of the Mini Pops that he found on the street or in someone’s trash.  The other is his sister’s CD of the Black Eyed Peas.

When Bubaloo listens to music, it’s no longer at an audible level.  He has to blast it which causes the entire house to reverberate and shake.  You know you’re a parent of a tween when you ask for the volume to be turned down and the response is a towel is shoved under the door.

A quiet peace has descended upon the house this week as both Bella and Bubaloo have headed off to summer camp for another week.  Not just any camp, but a camp for kids with LGBTQ parents.  We dropped them off at the bus stop on Sunday and retired to bed early that evening.

With no kids to worry about shuttling to various summer activities, Wifey and I have been looking forward to sleeping in each morning.  We can get up between 7:00 – 7:30 am and still manage to make it to work before 8:30 am.  The alarm clock is set for 7:00 and we’ve strategically planned to hit 1-3 snoozes each morning.

The last two mornings, however, we haven’t been able to exercise our snooze options.  This is because our son is a brilliant prankster.  Somehow he figured out that Wifey’s CD player has an alarm and this is a very sophisticated alarm that uses whatever CD is in the player to wake you up.  At 7:01 am, and at a volume around 30, the Black Eyed Peas begin to rev up.

What is not so sophisticated is that Wifey and I don’t know how to turn it off.  Despite the fact that this was her CD player for over 12 years.

Yesterday I turned off the power and thought that would be sufficient.  It obviously wasn’t as the music was blaring again this morning.  After this morning’s glorious wake up call, I removed the CD and turned the volume down to zero.  Hopefully the irritance is now resolved.  But now, even more exciting, is what kind of prank are we going to execute on Bubaloo as payback?
